The office of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is going to be shifted to its newly built 12-storied building at Agargaon, from the capital’s Segun Bagicha area, by December 31 next.

Official activities at the new office will start from the beginning of January next year, NBR officials confirmed to The Business Post.

Tax Commissioner Lutful Azim, project director of the NBR building, said, “We have been officially asked to complete shifting within this year and I am hoping to end the work in time.”

He said, “We wanted to shift the office from November but NBR will be passing the busiest time throughout November as it is the last month for filing income tax returns for the financial year.

That is why the shifting of office has been deferred to December.”

The revenue head office, appellate and tribunal units, chief investigation cell and two units of large taxpayers will be shifted to the new office at 60 Feet Road in Agargaon, he added.

The 12-storied building has been constructed at a cost of Tk 412 crore, though the total estimated cost was Tk 451 crore. The rest of the project cost has been returned to the authorities concerned, said NBR sources.

The officials said 98 per cent of the construction work has already been finished while the rest will be completed within the stipulated time.

Lutful Azim said, “Almost everything is done. The rest will be completed during or after shifting of the office because if it is finished now some materials might be stolen or get spoiled.”

Modern facilities in NBR’s building

The cutting-edge building covers over 6,00,000 square feet, with each floor 13 feet high, and each of the two basements covers 66,000 square feet. From the ground floor to the fourth floor, each level is 44,000 square feet and 46,000 square feet each from the
fifth to the remaining floors.

According to project sources, the eco-friendly has a central air conditioning system, eight elevators, a 400-seat multipurpose hall, a revenue archive, a library, a record room and a central data processing centre and server space. Besides, it will accommodate a computer lab, training centre, commercial bank branch, ATM booth, post office, courier service, stationery shop,
bar lounge and green space.

The other facilities include a full-time generator facility, building management system, access control security system, entry and exit for the physically challenged and senior citizens, natural ventilation in case of emergency, cafeteria, call centre, daycare centres, media centre, separate prayer rooms, and toilet zones for both male and female on each floor.
