Sitrang: 2 dead, 8 missing in Ctg

At least two people, including a child, lost their lives in separate incidents caused by Cyclone Sitrang as it hit Chattogram on Monday.

Eight workers are also feared to have died after a barge capsized in the Sandwip Channel of the Bay of Bengal off the port city’s Mirsarai upazila during the onslaught of the cyclone, defence officials said. The workers went missing and are yet to be found as a full-fledged immediate rescue operation was not possible.

Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defense officials said the barge sank around 10.00pm Monday.

Abdus Salam, one of the workers onboard the barge while it capsized, survived and informed the local administration about the incident near the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar.

There were nine people onboard the barge, Abdullah Harun Pasha of Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defense said, citing Salam.

The civil defence official said all the eight missing labourers could be inside the barge. A rescue operation to rescue them had begun on Tuesday morning.

He said, “We started the rescue operation with six of our divers.

“But it was impossible to enter the barge and rescue the missing people until Tuesday evening.”

As the barge is submerged in water, there is little chance of anyone being alive inside, Pasa
feared.

Meanwhile, a young man named Mobarak Hossain died from electrocution while trying to save furniture from tidal waves at Mohra area of Chandgaon in Chattogram. Three other members of his family also suffered injuries from the tidal waves.

Akram Ullah, ‍an inspector in charge of naval police of the area, said the body was recovered and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

In a separate incident, the body of a three-month-old baby girl was found floating near a shipyard in Sitakunda on Tuesday morning.
