Aiming to incorporate his dreams and willingness to do something in the education sector, Ekushey Padak-winning industrialist Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman established the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS), Education Minister Dipu Moni has said.
UITS propels the education of meritorious students from low-income families at a low cost and now it’s one of the best universities in Bangladesh, she added.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the freshers’ reception at UITS in Dhaka’s Baridhara on Saturday.
Calling UITS founder Sufi Mizan a true visionary, Dipu said he likes to shape the dreams of the new generation. At his invitation, the late president of India APJ Abdul Kalam and former prime minister of Malaysia Mahathir bin Mohamad attended the first and second convocations, respectively, during which their speeches encouraged the graduates to work hard and reach their full potential.
The president of Bangladesh, who is also the university’s chancellor, also graced all three convocations of UITS with his presence and handed over the degrees to the graduates of this esteemed institution.
Saying Sufi Mizan is an idol of the young generation, the education minister thanked him for his contribution to shaping the lives of all UITS students.
Addressing the newly admitted students, she said, “We expect you all to finish your studies with exemplary results and work for the betterment of the country, its people and humanity while idolising Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dream [of a Sonar Bangla]. I wish you all the best.”
Sufi Mizanur, also the chairman of PHP Family, was present at the event which was presided over by UITS Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Abu Hashan Bhuiyan. University Grants Commission Member Professor Dr Biswajit Chanda and member of the UITS Board of Trustees and PHP Family Director Mohamed Ali Hossain were present as special guests.
Apart from them, the ceremony, which included a cultural event with performances of the university’s students at the end, was also addressed by other high officials and faculty members of UITS.
Among others, heads of different departments, educationalists, distinguished guests, alumni members, students and their guardians also attended the lively programme.
