Metro rail: BB to launch commemorative note, coin

The Bangladesh Bank will launch a set of commemorative coin and note marking the inauguration of the country’s first metro rail, Finance Division sources say.

But the date of launching has not been set yet.

The Uttara to Agargaon segment of the metro rail is likely to open to the public in December, Dhaka Mass Transit Company sources said.

In this regard, the Road Transport and Highways Division requested the finance ministry to launch the commemorative coin and note to make the day memorable, sources also said.

The finance ministry then asked the Treasury and Debt Management Sub-Division to take necessary steps through the Bangladesh Bank.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the much-awaited metro rail.

Metro Rail Line-6 consists of 17 elevated stations with a total length of 21.26 kilometres from Uttara to Kamalapur.

It is expected to serve more than 60,000 passengers per hour both ways. The trains will wait for 43 seconds at each station.

Once metro rail opens to the public, it will be the most time-efficient, reliable, safe, comfortable, and environment-friendly solution to the severe traffic congestion in the capital.

It will also transform Dhaka into a more active, commuter-friendly, and sustainable city. The implementing agency is working tirelessly to unveil the Uttara-Agargaon segment, sources said.
