Bangladesh and Germany signed four agreements to the tune of €44.93 million in grants on Tuesday.
The Economic Relations Division (ERD), German Development Bank KfW, and the German technical cooperation agency GIZ signed the agreements on behalf of their respective governments at the ERD office in Dhaka, read a
press release.
The projects are Climate Change Adapted Urban Development (CCAUD) Program Phase- III, Policy Advisory for Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (PAP), Energy Efficiency and Grid Integration of Renewable Energy II (EEGIRE II) and Higher Education and Leadership Development for Sustainable Textiles in Bangladesh (HELD).
On behalf of the Bangladesh government, ERD Secretary Sharifa Khan signed the agreements, while GIZ Dhaka office Country Director Dr Andreas Kuck and KfW Regional Office in Bangladesh Country Director Michael Sumser signed on behalf of the German government.
Germany will provide €33.50 million for Climate Change Adapted Urban Development (CCAUD) Program Phase- III, to be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department and Local Government Division.
The CCAUD project aims to improve the living conditions of climate change (CC) and flood-affected urban populations in selected areas. It will be implemented in Gaibandha Sadar, Islampur, and Sirajganj Municipality.
Policy Advisory for Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (PAP) project will get €5 million. The project aims to improve the technical foundations for further expansion of grid-connected renewable energy (RE).
The PAP project, now in its second phase, will be implemented by the Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
The Energy Efficiency and Grid Integration of Renewable Energy II (EEGIRE II) project will get €3.43 million. It aims to improve the technical foundations for further expansion of grid-connected renewable energy (RE).
The EEGIRE II project will be implemented by the Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd (PGCB) and Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
The donor will provide €3 million to Higher Education and Leadership Development for Sustainable Textiles in Bangladesh (HELD) project, to be implemented by the University Grants Commission, Bangladesh (UGC) under Bangladesh Technical Education
Board (BTEB).
