The Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA) has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to extend the duration of tax return submission by two months for the tax year 2022-23 without any penalty for delay.
The association sent a letter, signed by its General Secretary Advocate Zakaria Khan Sawpan, to NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem, asking to extend the time of return submission to January 31 next.
The Business Post has obtained the letter. It reads, “Taxpayers in different professions are not able to file a tax return due to the country’s ongoing economic strain triggered by the global headwinds.”
It added, “In order to reach the target of revenue collection, increase the revenue basket and ensure convenience for taxpayers, the duration of tax return filling should be increased by two months.”
The tax authority is currently observing ‘Tax Service Month’ to facilitate taxpayers to file their tax returns timely for the year 2022-23 and the initiative will end on November 30 which is the deadline for the submission.
Under the initiative, NBR is providing services to taxpayers in a festive mood at all of its 649 circles under 31 tax zones across the country.
According to the Finance Act, 2022, a person is required to furnish a proof of submission of tax return in the cases of applying for a loan exceeding Tk five lakh from a bank or a financial institution; becoming a director or a sponsor shareholder of a company; obtaining or continuing an import registration certificate or export registration certificate; obtaining or renewing a trade license in the area of a city corporation or paurashava.
It is also mandatory for obtaining registration of a co-operative society; obtaining or renewing a license or enlisting as a surveyor of general insurance; obtaining registration, by a resident, of the deed of transfer; obtaining or maintaining a credit card; obtaining or continuing electricity connection in a city corporation or cantonment board and so forth all sorts of important cases in daily life.
