DIRD Group to shut 4 RMG factories for indefinite period

The authorities of DIRD Group have decided to close its four apparel factories at Hemayetpur of Savar for an indefinite period.

A notice signed by DIRD Group Deputy General Manager (Administration) stated that due to some unforeseen events and the downward trend of factory production, the authorities are compelled to announce the closure of the company for an indefinite period as per the section 13 of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006.

The workers found the closure notice on the factory gate when they came to work on Saturday morning.

The four DIRD Group factories that are announced are: Dipta Apparels, Dipta Garments, DIRD Garments, and DIRD Washing Plant.

Over 7,000 regular workers along with 3,000 temporary workers are working the rest factories, DIRD Group’s a senior official said.

On condition of anonymity, one of DIRD Group’s senior officials said that the declining trend of exports order forced the company to take the decision of the closure of the factories.

When contacted, DIRD’s founder and current chairperson, Itemad Ud Daulah, declined to comment on the issue, asking to reach his son, but The Business Post could not reach him over the phone.

Some other senior officials said that the factories have been shut down due to several unprecedented reasons, including a scarcity of raw materials and some unwanted problems. The officials showed reluctance to say anything more regarding the matter.

A worker at Dipta Apparels, who requested anonymity, said that workers have some issues with the company authorities, including the disbursement of outstanding wages and dues during the Covid-19 period and holiday payments.

He said the authorities paid one month’s overdue amount after the mid-level employees of the factories went on strike demanding payment of two months.

When the demands were not met, the workers of Dipta Apparels tried to negotiate with the owners again last Friday, he added.
