Tourism in Bandarban has been suffering severely since the Covid-19 pandemic as thousands of industry people lost their jobs and tourists were not interested in travelling.
As the pandemic situation improved over the past few months, three local tourism business-related associations have decided to offer a maximum of 30 per cent discount to attract more tourists during the winter to tackle the crisis.
Leaders of the Hotel-Motel-Resort Owners Association, Microbus-Jeep-Pickup Owners Association and Restaurant Owners Association made the announcement during a press briefing at the Bandarban Press Club on Tuesday. They also said that there is no obstacle in travelling to all tourist spots in the district, except for those at Ruma and Rowangchhari Upazilas, in line with the district
administration’s directives.
In a written speech, the associations’ leaders said the district attends to a large number of local and foreign tourists during winter every year. But that changed in the past two years due to Covid. This year, the number of tourists is yet to rise.
The authorities of all hotels, motels, resorts, transports and restaurants are ready to serve and to attract more tourists, they have decided to offer a 30 per cent discount on accommodations, 20 per cent discount on transportation and 10 per cent discount on restaurants to local and foreign tourists visiting Bandarban before December 20, the leaders said.
Hotel-Motel-Resort Owners Association President Amal Kanti Das, Microbus-Jeep-Pickup Owners Association President Nasirul Alam, Restaurant Owners Association President Giash Uddin, and other leaders of the three organisations were present at the press conference.
Nasirul said nearly 5,000 tourists used to visit Bandarban during winter. But the flow of tourists has witnessed a sharp fall recently. Nearly 10,000 people are directly involved in the tourism sector and half of them lost their jobs because of this. “We hope this initiative will help us bring back the jobs.”
