State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has expressed concern about the delay in the Dhaka-Chattogram fuel supply pipeline project.
After visiting the project site in Narayanganj’s Godnail area on Wednesday, he urged the authorities concerned to finish the project quickly.
The project was supposed to be completed in December 2020, but the deadline was extended till December 2022 as work was not finished. However, the project authorities could not meet even the new deadline.
The parliamentary standing committee on power, energy and mineral resources recently said the project should be finished as soon as possible. Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is implementing the Tk 758 crore project.
Nasrul said it was unfortunate that the project was not completed on schedule, adding Covid-19 slowed down the pace of implementation.
“If our local engineers are appointed to supervise the contractor’s activities, it will be possible to implement the project more quickly.”
BPC Chairman ABM Azad and Project Director Aminul Islam were present during the state minister’s visit.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division said it would be possible to save around Tk 227 crore annually after the project’s completion.
The government currently distributes fuel mainly through waterways and railways, which is very expensive due to the complexities involved.
