Egg, chicken, veg prices drop further

The prices of eggs and chickens which hit an all-time high recently have come down further in the city markets.

The price of four pieces of eggs has decreased by Tk 2 while farm chickens by Tk 10 per kilogram compared to last week. As per the market data, the prices of eggs and chickens have dropped by 16 per cent in the last one month.

During visit to kitchen markets on Thursday, this correspondent saw that farm eggs were selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 four pieces each, which was Tk 40-Tk 42 last week, while broiler chickens at Tk 150-Tk 160 per kg, which was Tk 160-Tk 170 last week.

Besides, the prices of Sonali chickens fell to Tk 280-Tk 290 per kg from Tk 290-Tk 300 in the
previous week.

Apart from eggs and chickens, the prices of edible oil and vegetables have also decreased, but rice is being sold at higher prices than before. The prices of most staples, including flour, sugar and pulses, still remain high.

In the capital’s markets, including Segunbagicha and Mohammadpur Krishi markets, Nazir Shail was selling at Tk 80-Tk 82 per kg, Miniket at Tk 70-Tk 73 per kg, BR-28 at Tk 57-Tk 60 per kg, and Swarna at Tk 54-Tk 58 per kg on Thursday.

Loose flour was selling at Tk 60-Tk 65 per kg while packed flour at Tk 70-Tk 75 per kg. Chickpeas were selling at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and lentils at Tk 110-Tk 150 per kg on Thursday.

However, sugar prices still remain high despite various measures taken by the government as it was selling at Tk 110-Tk 125 per kg in the retail market. The government set the price of sugar at Tk 108 per kg.

The price of edible oil dropped by Tk 3 per litre after it increased by Tk 14 per litre last month. According to the new price rates, bottled soybean oil will sell at Tk 187 per litre from December 18.

Earlier on November 17, the price of soybean oil was increased by Tk 12 per litre from Tk 178 to Tk 190. Apart from soybean, the commerce ministry has also set new prices for palm oil.

Loose soybean oil will sell at Tk 167 per litre as per the new price, which is currently Tk 172. Besides, the new price of a five-litre bottle of soybean oil has been fixed at Tk 906, which is currently Tk 925. The price of loose palm super oil fell to Tk 117 per litre from Tk 121.

Besides, prices of vegetables fell slightly at retail level on Thursday. Newly harvested potato was selling at Tk 25-30 a kg in the market, which was Tk 30-Tk 35 a kg last week while tomato at Tk 80-Tk 100 a kg, which was Tk 90-Tk 120 a kg last week, carrot at Tk 60-Tk 80 a kg, which was Tk 70-100 a kg last week.

Apart from this, the prices of other vegetables, including beans, cauliflower, cabbage and green chilli, have decreased by Tk 5-10 per kg.
