The sweeping bone-chilling cold has disrupted the daily life of Panchagarh residents as mercury continues to drop further day by day.
The country’s lowest temperature was recorded in Tetulia upazila in the district for straight two days.
On Tuesday, the lowest temperature was recorded 10.7 degree Celsius at Tetulia which was 11.3 degree Celsius a day earlier, according the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Tetulia, the last border town in northern Bangladesh, is no stranger to extreme cold, where poor visibility due to spiraling fog greatly hampered the regular work schedule of locals on Tuesday morning. Local people said that dense fog has wrapped up the district since Monday night.
Shamsher Ali, 55, driver of a three-wheeler in Shingpara area of Panchagarh Sadar upazila, said “I am shivering amid this extreme cold, not even able to see few meters ahead due to the dense fog. But I have to earn to put bread on the table for my family. Hunger does not bother cold weather.”
People were seen trying to warm-up themselves by lighting straws and woods while transports are struggling to ply on roads keeping the headlights on due to thick fog.
Meteorologist Rasel Shah of Tetulia Met office said a cold-wave may hit the district at the end of this month.
Besides, Met office on Tuesday predicted that the temperature may fall further across the country in the next 72 hours.
Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Md Jahurul Islam said they have already distributed 22,500 blankets among cold stricken people and sought more blankets from the ministry for distribution.
In its daily forecast, BMD said weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country. Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
