Ex-Tripura CM Biplab’s ancestral home attacked

Violent clashes broke out between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) near the ancestral home of former Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb in Gomati district on Tuesday.

Gomati superintendent of police Ajit Pratap Singh on Wednesday said the situation was under control. He said there was no communal angle in the incident, reports The Times of India.

SP Singh said, “A political clash broke out between BJP and CPM workers on Tuesday at Rajdhan Nagar where three shops and few vehicles were damaged. Police reached the spot immediately and brought the situation under control. One person has been arrested and seven others have been detained for interrogation following registration of two FIRs”.

“Some reports appeared that the attack happened at the house of a senior political functionary and there is a communal angle in it. But it is clarified that the reports are false and are not based on the facts. Necessary security deployment has been made in the locality to maintain law and order,” he added.

However, locals said a group of the Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists set a shop of a Muslim man on fire near former chief minister and Rajyasabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb’s ancestral home.

Deb on Tuesday night alleged that CPM-backed miscreants had attacked his house in Jamjuri at midnight ahead of the annual ritual of the departed soul of his father scheduled on Wednesday.

According to Deb, attackers targeted the saints and priests who came from Haryana to perform Yajna at his house and they vandalised the vehicles of a saint and a few two-wheelers near his house.

Meanwhile, local sources alleged that the CPM had a pre-scheduled programme in Kakraban area on Wednesday and the party had erected flags and festoons, which were destroyed by the BJP and VHP workers.

They have reportedly asked the local CPM workers to cancel the programme because Yajna is organised at Biplab Deb’s house, which according to them is more important that triggered the sentiment.

Later, some unknown miscreants set a shop owned by a Muslim villager on fire.
