A mild cold wave is sweeping over at least 27 districts of the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

However, people of a few areas may find some relief from the biting cold as the cold wave may abate from several parts of the country in the 24 hours from 6.00pm Friday, said the department in its routine evening weather forecast.

At the same time, both night and day temperature are expected to rise during the period.

The Met Department said a mild cold wave is sweeping over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions -comprised of eight districts each- and the districts of Faridpur, Madaripur, Manikgonj, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Feni, Jashore, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Barishal and Bhola. “It may abate from some places.”

Temperature between 8 to 10 degrees Celsius is considered a mild cold wave, 6 to 8 degrees Celsius a moderate cold wave and less than 6 degrees Celsius a severe cold wave.

The lowest temperature in the country on Friday was recorded in Dinajpur at 8.0 degrees Celsius in 24 hours till 6.00pm. Apart from this, 8.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Syedpur and Dimla, 8.3 in Tentulia and Ishwardi, 8.5 in Rajarhat and Srimangal, 8.6 in Rajshahi, 8.8 in Chuadanga.

Teknaf experienced the highest temperature of 29.6 degree Celsius.

In the capital, the minimum temperature yesterday was recorded to be 11.8 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature was 26.6 degree Celsius.

In its forecast for the next 24 hours from 6.00pm, the Met Department said, “Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, having chances of light rain or drizzle at one or two places over Khulna, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions.”

Also, during the period, the national meteorological organisation said, “Night temperature may rise by 1-2 degree Celsius and day temperature may rise slightly over the country.”

The expected rise in temperature will bring slight relief to many suffering from a biting cold that has already claimed dozens of lives, including children, and resulted in the hospitalisation of thousands of patients.

The met office also forecasted, “Moderate to thick fog may occur over the river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country during midnight to morning and it may continue till noon at places. “

In the meantime, the Met Department’s outlook for the next few days states that a temperature fall is expected in the next five days.
