Child dies of Nipah virus in RMCH

A child who was infected with the deadly Nipah virus died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Monday.

The deceased is Sawad, 7, of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna.

Sawad breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital. Earlier on Sunday evening, Nipah virus was detected in his body.

Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, in charge of ICU at the hospital, said Sawad drank raw date juice on Friday morning. Later he started suffering from fever and convulsions.

Later, he was brought to the RMCH when he fell unconscious. He was later admitted to the NICU.

With this, two patients died due to Nipah virus at RMCH this year, said the hospital sources.

Earlier in the first week this year, a woman, infected with the virus, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The deceased was a resident of Matikata in Godagari of Rajshahi.
