The Dhaka International Trade Fair-2023 is expected to post a record Tk 1 billion in sales defying worries of low profits due to the ongoing economic crises and the venue’s long distance from the centre of the capital.

“A total of 30 lakh visitors visited the fair while the value of sales is expected to be Tk 100 crore,” said Md Iftekher Ahmed Chowdhury, secretury, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), the organiser of the fair.

The month-long event is scheduled to conclude today.

Expressing satisfaction with the visitor turnout, Iftekhar said some 30 lakh people visited the fair in the last one month, of which some 10 lakh visited in just the last three-four days.

“Purbachal turned out to be a suitable place to arrange trade fairs. We will come with more innovation next year. Big companies will be attracted to come to showcase products,” he added.

Meanwhile, on Monday, DITF saw a huge crowd of visitors, pushing up sales, especially of cookeries, textile, footwear, personal care, luxury and home cleaning products.

Sellers at the fair came up with different discount offers to tempt customers during the last hours of the fair. Many are offering the products with lower prices to boost sales.

“More visitors came to the fair this year compared to last year. When the fair kicked off earlier this month, we witnessed low sales but that changed in the last several days,” Md Yasin Gani Chowdhury, general manager of Delhi Aluminium Factory LTD, told The Business Post.

“We are enjoying a huge boost in sales. We are happy as the sales are defying ongoing economic crises and the distance of the fair from the capital city,” he added.

Md Ibrahim, manager of Anower Jamdani Kutir, expressed his satisfaction on the overall performance of sales.

He said he made better sales this year than 2022. “We will come with more diversification of products and hope to do better next year.”

On the contrary, some traders expressed frustration with sales performance, saying the ongoing economic crises has reduced customers’ purchasing capacity.

Md Shajahan, proprietor of Choice Fashion, said they failed to achieve their sales target.

“We set a target to sell a total of 2,000 pieces of blazer but we could manage to sell even 1,300 pieces. This year, the number of traders was much more in the fair compared to the previous year, dividing up sales too much,” he said.
