Ministry plans to print pri textbooks under DPE

The Primary and Mass Education Ministry is mulling printing free-of-cost primary-level textbooks under the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) instead of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) from next year.

A proposal in this regard will be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina soon seeking her approval, the ministry’s Secretary Farid Ahmed said at a press briefing at the secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He said that according to their proposal, the government will save Tk 20-30 crore if the books are printed through DPE. It will also reduce the load on NCTB.

“We will work next year in line with the prime minister’s decision. However, there are no complications this year. We will carry out our responsibility as the government’s decisions,” he added.

Asked whether it will be difficult to print textbooks on time this year, the secretary said that this year is the election year for the government. “We have taken more precautions than last year.”

“We have already held a meeting with everyone from NCTB and DPE and issued a time-bound action plan. This year, we will ensure that all textbooks reach the upazila level by November at any cost. For this, we’ll do whatever is necessary as per the action plan,” he stressed.

Since 2010, the government has been distributing free textbooks among students on the first day of every year. At present, NCTB prints textbooks for students of primary and secondary levels.
