Bangladesh has made impressive progress in the last 14 years in many economic indicators reflecting the political policies of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman.
“After Independence, Bangabandhu adopted three very important policies and they were a very timely and appropriate decision. The policies were increasing food production, controlling the population and emphasising the right to public education,” he said.
Atiur was addressing a seminar, titled “Language Movement to Liberation War: The Progress of Middle class in East Bengal,” organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Dhaka on Wednesday. BIDS Director General Dr Binayak Sen presided over the event.
Bangladesh has moved fast and saw accelerated economic development in these 14 years as the country witnessed a rapid growth of many economic indicators including exports and remittances, Atiur said.
This growth will continue as many mega projects, including the Padma Bridge which connects Dhaka city with 21 districts, will ensure sustainable economic development, he added.
The Father of The Nation started dreaming of building a “Sonar Bangla” when he was only a young politician, Atiur said.
