Victim Kulsum dies without touching newborn son

Umma Kulsum, who was burnt in the March 12 explosion in a flat in Narayanganj, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) in the capital on Thursday, 10 days after she had given birth to her second son.

Before her death, she could not touch her child even for once because they were kept in separate hospitals. She was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at SHNIBPS while her son was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Her family members said Kulsum and her first son Khalid, 3, sustained burn injuries in the explosion in their flat located on the sixth floor of a 10-storey building in the Fatullah area. They were rushed to SHNIBPS.

During the incident, Kulsum’s husband Masud, who is a businessman, was outside the house.

“With a 28 per cent burn in the body, she was under the care of gynaecologists in the hospital. She gave birth to her second son the next day (March 13) at around 11am,” SHNIBPS Resident Surgeon Dr SM Ayub Hossain told reporters.

He said the condition of both the mother and the child was serious after the latter’s birth.

“For this reason, the child was put in the NICU at DMCH while Kulsum was here. Her relatives could not bring the newborn here as both were ill. She died at around 6am on Thursday,” he added.

DMCH Assistant Director Ashraful Alam said on Thursday that the newborn was not out of danger yet.

Kulsum’s uncle Kawsar Ahmed said Khalid’s condition has improved.

“But he constantly wants to go to his mother, and it is becoming very difficult for us to handle him,” he added.
