Life turns paralysed as a heatwave sweeps over Bangladesh and people are finding it hard to keep up with their normal routine.

The high temperature has forced people to stay indoors across Bangladesh.

Despite such extreme weather, shoppers in Dhaka continue to crowd markets and malls for their Eid shopping as the largest festival of Muslims nears.

The mild to moderate heat wave, that is sweeping the country may continue and turn into a severe one as the temperatures are likely to exceed 40°C in the next five days.

The temperature has already reached 39.7°C in Chuadanga of Khulna on Wednesday, said Meteorologist Monowar Hossain, adding that, there is no probability of temperature fall; rather the spiralling temperature may exceed 40°C and hit up to 42°C in the next five days.

The scorching heat has already imposed acute misery on the people during the month of Ramadan while the enthusiasm of Eid shoppers also slowed down significantly in the capital.

Day labourers and the underprivileged are the worst suffers as they have to earn bread for their families at any cost.

A mild heat wave occurs when the temperature reaches the 38°C limit and above 38°C to 40°C temperature is termed as moderate and beyond the 40°C is called a severe heat wave, said Monowar Hossain.

In its heatwave alert, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said that prevailing mild to moderate heat wave condition over the country is likely to continue till April 17.

Rain may occur after April 17 in some parts of the country while nor’wester may sweep over the country after April 23 when the temperature may fall slightly, Hossain added.

The mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and it may continue, Met office stated in its next 24-hour outlook commencing from 6 pm on Wednesday.

Day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly while the weather may remain dry with a temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.

About the synoptic situation, BMD said a trough of low lies over West Bengal and the adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay.
