Google Meet finally supports 1080p video calls

Google Meet finally supports 1080p video calls — but only for paying subscribers. In an update on Wednesday, Google says it’s bringing the upgrade to select Workspace and Google One users.

Additionally, you can only access 1080p video calls on the web-based version of Google Meet, and it all depends on wheth-er your computer’s webcam actually supports the resolution, reports The Verge.

Google also notes that you’ll need additional bandwidth to send 1080p video and says that it will automatically adjust your resolution if bandwidth is “constrained.”

The feature isn’t enabled by default, but you can toggle it on by selecting the three dots in the top right corner of your vid-eo feed and then hitting Turn on HD video.

Since Google Meet previously only supported resolutions of 720p or lower, it’s nice that we finally get the chance to see our colleagues more clearly. Other videoconferencing apps, including Zoom and Microsoft Teams, already have support for 1080p calls.

Google says 1080p video calling is available for all users with the following plans: Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus, Enterprise Essentials, and Frontline.

It’s also available to users with a Google One plan that supports at least 2TB of storage.

While the service can technically handle the higher resolution now, you’ll still need a camera that also supports 1080p. A lot of computer cameras don’t, and you may still have one that’s still stuck with 720p resolution. All of the MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros prior to the M-Series processors are still stuck with the lower-resolution potato camera.
