A nor’wester coupled gusty or squally wind lashed over the capital on Saturday evening bringing a quick relief to the city dwellers from the soaring heat.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said nor’wester with a speed of 62 kph swept over the capital at 6pm on Saturday while they recorded one millimeter rainfall.
Earlier, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) predicted that in association with rain and thunder showers temporary squally wind of 60-80 kph speed is likely to occur over the regions of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla and Sylhet.
The river ports have been advised to hoist riverine warning signal no two from Saturday’s 3pm to 1am of Sunday, said a modified inland river ports warning signed by Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid.
The weather forecast also stated that rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with hails at isolated places in the next 24 hours.
Besides, rain or thunder showers activity may increase at the first half of the period in the next five days commencing from Saturday evening, BMD said. Day temperature may fall slightly and night temperature may fall by (1-2) degree Celsius over the country.
About the synoptic situation, Met Office said that the trough of low lies over West Bengal to Northwest Bay.
However, a mild heat wave is sweeping over the districts of Dhaka, Madaripur, Rajshshi, Pabna, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, Barishal, Patuakhali and Bhola and it may abate.
Earlier, Meteorological Department in its extended outlook said that the overall rainfall may slightly rise in the month of May. In the next two or three days, rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind and strong nor’wester may lash over North, Northeastern and Middle region of the country while thunder showers coupled with hails and moderate nor’wester may hit the country in the next 5 to 7 days.
In May, one severe and two-three mild or moderate heat waves may sweep over the country and three depressions may form at the Bay of Bengal while one of them can turn into a cyclonic storm.
