Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has called on authorities concerned to bolster cooperation between government agencies to improve living standards for the residents of the port city.
He made the call at the 27th general meeting of the 6th elected panel of CCC on Sunday. At the meeting, the mayor expressed concern about the present living conditions and future of the people in Chattogram who are suffering from encroachment and pollution. “People are suffering because WASA is supplying salt water but there is not much discussion about the cause of salinity.”
He identified three reasons for the intrusion of saline water in Chattogram – long periods of drought, a drying Kaptai Lake, and the growth of algae and intrusion of saltwater in Karnafuli and Halda rivers. The mayor also said plans are underway to build a park in each ward of the city. Besides, proposals have been made to the district administration and railway authority to build playgrounds and parks on their procured land.
