Eminent economist and former deputy chairman of the country’s first planning commission Professor Nurul Islam passed away. He was 94.

He breathed his last around 12:00 pm local time in Washington DC of the United States on Monday due to a heart attack.

Adnan Morshed, professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, confirmed the news of his demise to the media on Tuesday.

Nurul Islam was serving the duty of emeritus fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) until his demise. He joined the institute in 1987 as a senior policy adviser to the director general.

In his professional career, the noted economist was a teacher of the economics department at Dhaka University and the chairman of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
