The 50 years of UAE-Bangladesh diplomatic relations has been celebrated through art exhibition from May 20 to May 24.
Mohammed Abu Zafar, the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates and Permanent Representative of IRENA, inaugurated the event at the American University of Dubai (AUD), says a press release.
An art camp was also organised with ten Bangladeshi artists at the same venue. Both events were organised by Bangladesh Consulate General in Dubai and Northern Emirates in collaboration with Bangladesh Art Week and the AUD.
To celebrate this unique moment of friendship, despite cultural diversity, Bridging Culture features eleven Bangladeshi artists and five Emirati artists.
Participating artists were Jamal Ahmed, Kanak Chanpa Chakma, Shahjahan Ahmed Bikas, Jamal Hossain, Anisuzzaman, Dulal Chandra Love, Abida Hossain, Hasura Akhter Rumki, MD Sajedul Islam, Subarna Morsheda and from the United Arab Emirates –Dr. Muhammad Yusuf, Nuzum Alganem, Jassim Al Awadhi, Afra Salman Al Suwaidi, Rashid Abdullah Almulla.
This group show was curated by Bangladesh Art Week founder Niharika Mumtaz. She said, “Bangladesh Art Week is a great occasion to celebrate the golden jubilee of our diplomatic relations through art. We had a diverse group of 15 talented artists out of which 35 per cent were women.”
Members of the group have exhibited at prestigious events like Venice Biennale, Documenta, Asia Biennale Sikka, RAK Fine Art Festival, Alliance Francis Dhaka etc.
These invited artists represent the vibrant, socially conscious and daring artists who live and work in Bangladesh and the UAE. As with the artists’ materials, their power derives from the considerable variety of representations that surround their work; while reflecting their own distinct understanding of a unique geographic environment.
BM Jamal Hussain, the Consul General of Bangladesh, Dubai and Northern Emirates said, “This is the first of many such events, it’s just the beginning.”
Michael Rice, Chair of the Department of Visual Communication and Professor of Studio Art at the American University of Dubai said “AUD is delighted to host this event to celebrate and commemorate 50 years of UAE-Bangladesh friendship through the arts. Both the exhibition and the art camp were great successes and we look forward to further collaborations with all the artists involved”.
