ACC grills former Gazipur mayor Jahangir

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday interrogated former Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alam for four hours on allegations of embezzling money from the development works of the corporation and making deals through fake bank accounts.

ACC sources said a team of the anti-graft body led by its deputy director Ali Akbor interrogated Jahangir from 10:30am to 2:30pm at the commission’s headquarters in Dhaka.

After the interrogation, Jahangir told journalists at the ACC office that there is no trace of those who filed the complaints. “The ACC is a state institution, working for the betterment of the nation. They have summoned me in the past and today as well. I have come here with respect for the ACC and the law, answering all their inquiries.”

Refusing his involvement with corruption, he claimed that the government allocated only Tk 600-700 crore for two projects. However, various departments, including ACC and the LGRD ministry, have levied baseless corruption allegations of Tk 7,500 crore against me.”

Jahangir also said, “All these falsehood, injustice, and irregularities are merely on paper. The ACC is currently investigating the complaints they received. I have provided a written response, refuting all the false accusations brought against me.”
