BBS conducting socio-economic survey

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics is currently conducting a socio-economic and demographic survey nationwide to collect information on various social and land-related issues.

This survey is being carried out as part of the Population and Housing Census, according to BBS officials.

During a visit to the South Haldiya area of Haldiya Union in Louhjong of Munshiganj, it was seen that a group of enumerators from the BBS were collecting information from Alamin Hossain. The enumerators inquired about the family size, whether anyone resides abroad, the family’s source of income, marriage, international migration, and other relevant details.

Habibur Rahman, an enumerator in Haldia Union, is going door to door to collect various data for the socio-economic and demographic survey of 2023. This survey aims to gather information on 194 indicators through 121 questions. Rahman mentioned, “We are visiting every household, and with the cooperation of the people, we are collecting information door to door.”

To facilitate data collection, the BBS has appointed local individuals as enumerators.

However, BBS officials are responsible for collecting information related to remittance and land.

Md Shariful Islam, Deputy Director of BBS (Munshiganj District Statistics Officer), stated that information is being collected smoothly with the cooperation of the participants. However, some individuals are reluctant to provide information regarding remittance and land, so strategic measures are being taken to gather this data. Some people have concerns that providing such information may lead to taxation.

The BBS conducted the 6th Census and Household Census from June 15 to June 21, 2022. This marked the first-ever complete digital census in the country’s history. Following the main census, the Socio-Economic and Demographic Survey of 2023 is being conducted in 12,040 selected sample areas across the country from May 21 to June 15, 2023, in line with international census guidelines. Similar to the main census, this sample survey is also being carried out entirely in a digital format.
