No bar to sacking officials for incompetence: BB

The Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday said the central bank does not bar banks from sacking their employees for incompetence and does not compel banks to give such employees promotion.

The central bank came up with the clarification on the day after it noticed confusing explanations among different quarters over its recent circular on rationalisation of the bank employees’ salary structure.

The explanations have been made based on part of the BB statement and are confusing thus hampering implementations of the circular, the central bank said, adding that it was not acceptable.

In the clarification, the Bangladesh Bank said the banks are not barred from taking administrative measures against their officials based on their own regulations if there is any proven case of incompetence.

Banks, however, are barred from sacking or depriving officials of promotion only because of not being able to achieve deposit collection targets.

On January 20, the central bank issued a set of guidelines on the salary structure to end discriminatory payments in different banks.

Under the circular, the salary of the entry-level officers has been set at Tk 28,000 and at Tk 39,000 upon successful completion of probation period.

The BB also set the entry-level salary of the cleaners, messengers and security guards at Tk 24,000.
