BB instructs banks to refrain from marking, stapling banknotes

The Bangladesh Bank has further instructed banks to refrain from putting seals or staples on banknote bundles or writing on banknotes.

The central bank issued a notice in this regard on Tuesday, saying that it had noticed that bank branches were writing numbers, dates and signatures directly on banknotes violating the central bank regulation.

As per the BB regulation, after confirming the number of notes in each packet, a flyleaf should be added with the name of the bank branch, seal, signature and date of the note counter after the packet binding.

Currency notes get damage within a short period due to such activities by bank branches, BB said.

The BB said that such activities by bank branches have also created barriers in implementing a clean note circulation policy.

The central bank has issued such notice several times previously.
