Two low-pressure areas may form over the Bay of Bengal in November and one of them is likely to turn into a cyclone, according to a long-term climate outlook forecast by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The country may also witness a normal amount of rainfall and the temperature of day and night will fall gradually ahead of the upcoming winter season, BMD said, adding that Mild to moderate morning fog may be visible in the northern region and river basins.
The forecast for the new cyclone comes at a time when inhabitants of the coastal areas are still suffering the aftermath of cyclonic storm ‘Sitrang’ that claimed dozens of lives in October.
At least 29 people died in 11 districts across Bangladesh as Sitrang made landfall and crossed the Barishal-Chattogram coast on October 25, leaving a trail of destruction, reports United News of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh experienced heavy downpours (42.49 per cent higher than the average rainfall during the month) in October influenced by ‘Sitrang’.
Around 10,000 houses in 419 unions of the country were damaged by cyclone Sitrang, said State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman.
Besides, crops on 6,000 hectares of land and 1,000 fish enclosures were damaged, he said, adding that several trees and electricity poles were uprooted in various places by the cyclone.
Cyclone Sitrang completed its landfall and weakened to a tropical depression over Bangladesh in the early hours of October 25, according to the BMD.
