Team Group, a leading business entity of the country, has set an example through initiating special facilities for pregnant workers at its ready-made garment factory during the pandemic.

At a time when the entire readymade garment industry is going through a tough time due to the ongoing lockdown and other restrictions, 4A Yarn Dyeing Ltd, a concern of Team Group, continued its support for nearly two hundred pregnant workers with multiple best practices.

The outwear and jacket manufacturing factory of the group located in Savar employs near about six thousand workers of which 72 percent are female.

Whenever a female worker reports to factory authorities of her expectancy, special arrangement for her pregnancy period begins. Expecting workers are provided with milk, egg, zinc, vitamins and folic tablets every day throughout her pregnancy period.

They are given a total of 112 days of maternity leave – 56 days before child delivery and 56 days after the delivery. Moreover, salary for 56 days is paid in advance and the rest of the amount is paid when the worker resumes work after leave.

The pregnant workers are relaxed from over time and allowed to leave the factory at 5pm. They are also given lighter work which do not require much body movement. In addition to regular one-hour lunch break, pregnant workers also get a 30-minute additional break for eating food items provided by the factory.

Pregnant workers also get medical checkup and counselling from in-house doctors at the factory.

Rahima Akter, an operator at 4A Yarn Dying Ltd, said that the care she received during her pregnancy ensured good health for both the baby and herself.

“If I was not working at the factory, it would have been impossible for me to get regular health check-up and special food considering the meager income of my husband who is a rickshaw puller. Now I am a proud working mother,” said Shahina Begum, another operator at the factory.

Abdullah Hil Rakib, Managing Director of Team Group said, “In March 2020 there were about 4,000 workers at the 4A Yarn Dying Ltd. We did not terminate any of the workers during the pandemic, rather we appointed new workers which increased the number of the workers at the factory to 5,753.”

“Our workers are the engines of our factory and they deserve these facilities during pregnancy period.”
