The HSBC Bank will plant a total of 40,000 trees at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar as part of its afforestation program that would protect the industrial enclave from climate change and other natural disasters.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was singed in this regard between Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and HSBC Bank at BEZA conference room in the capital on Thursday, said a press release.

BEZA general manager Hasan Arif and HSBC bank CEO Md Mahbub ur Rahman signed in MoU on behalf of the respective organisations while BEZA executive chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun and other official were present.

“We thank HSBC bank authority for coming to plant such trees in the zone. We hope that the trees will protect the economic zone from natural disaster like Sundarbans as it protects in its surrounding areas. However, around 15 lakh people will get jobs in the BSMSN,” Harun also said.

He also said, “We need more foreign investments in the country’s economic zones as the government would like to complete 97 zones by 2030. The scenery of Bangladesh will change if we can complete all zones. We hope different financial institutions and investors will plant 20 lakh trees in our all zones.”
