Saif Logistics Alliance (SLA), a subsidiary of Saif Powertec Limited, has initiated the construction process of the country’s first-ever eco-friendly multimodal container terminal at Halishahar in Chattogram.

The total cost of the container terminal, which is being setup on 21.29 acres of land owned by Bangladesh Railways, has been estimated at Tk 308 crore.

Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan inspected the project and inaugurated the construction work on Saturday.

Saif Powertec, the publicly traded terminal operator company, will operate the terminal on behalf of the Container Company of Bangladesh (CCBL) for 20 years, according to an agreement signed earlier.

Under the contract, Saif Logistics Alliance Limited will design, build, and ensure maintenance of the multi-modal container port to be linked with railways, roadways, and waterways.

The terminal is expected to be operational by the middle of 2023, said Tarafder SLA Managing Director Md Ruhul Amin attending the event.

CCBL Managing Director Belal Uddin said his organisation received Tk 7 crore as the signing money and will get 21.50 per cent of profits earned from the container terminal operation while Saif Powertec will get the rest.

Saif Powertec was picked up out of 14 companies, including four foreign ones, that submitted bids for the ICD construction. The SLA chairman said the capacity of Chattogram port will be increased through construction of the container terminal on the Chattogram railway line.

Among others, Railways Secretary Humayun Kabir, Railways DG Dhirendra Nath Majumder, GM of Eastern Railway Jahangir Hossain, attended the event.

Listed in 2014 at Dhaka bourse, Saif Powertec, which operates the Chattogram Container Terminal (CCT) and New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), makes up 65 per cent of the total twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers handled by the Chattogram port.

On Sunday, Saif Powertec shares changed hands at Tk 43.50 on the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
