‘Gender equality key for sustainable dev’

Gender equality is a necessary foundation for sustainable development in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, according to experts.

Women and girls have been leading on climate change adaptation and honoured for their leadership and contribution to society, they said at a programme organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh to mark International Women’s Day in Dhaka on Tuesday.

They said there is no space where women are not working and excelling at what they are doing. Whatever the crisis, they remained side by side with the men to meet the crisis. Women manage several things at the same time, they added

ICAB President Md Shahadat Hossain said Chartered Accountancy is a profession of high dignity in society. “Nobody can ignore this profession because of its high contribution to the society, to the economy, and the nation at large.”

So, it is the profession which is admired by all and give you more freedom in your life whether you pursue career or practice, he said adding, your career choice is a matter of your freedom,” he said. He also said ICAB’s women leadership committee is working toward nursing the young brilliants and focusing on women empowerment and equal representation of women in the accountancy profession.

To increase the number of enrolment of female CA students, ICAB has made it mandatory of taking a certain number of female students in every CA firm so that they could get the opportunity to enjoy the blessing of being a Chartered Accountant, he added.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

Wing Commander Tahmina Khanom, ICAB Council Member and SAFA Women Leadership Committee Chairperson Maria Howlader, Friendship Founder Runa Khan,  Lead Governance Specialist- Financial Management at World Bank Suraiya Zannath Khan, former secretary and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Managing Director Nomita Halder, and  World Bank’s Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Miyang Tembon spoke at the event.
