The Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Deshifarmer Limited signed a memorandum of understating (MoU) to provide garment workers with fresh produce collected directly from farmers at fair prices.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan and Chairman of Deshifarmer Limited Sumaiyah Mousinin inked the agreement on behalf of their respective sides at BGMEA’s PR office in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Tuesday, said BGMEA in a statement.
As per the MoU, Deshifarmer, a tech-based supply chain for fresh produce, will deliver farmers’ fresh produce to canteens, grocery shops and the workers of registered member factories of BGMEA.
The objective is to ensure that garment workers get the best food at best prices while farmers also get the fair price of their produce, thus benefitting both parties.
At present, the RMG industry contributes 11.2 per cent to the country’s GDP. The 4,600-plus RMG units constitute the largest industrial sector in the country, contributing 36 per cent of manufacturing employment and engaging 41 lakh workers.
