Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar on Wednesday said the government is trying to bring equality in terms of services and scopes in the country’s telecommunication sector.

“Posts and Telecommunications ministry is working with Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) in order to ensure level playing field for telecommunication service providers so that quality services can be ensured through competition among the operators,” the minister said.

The minister made the remarks while giving prizes to winners at a ceremony of the second edition of Robi’s Datathon at a hotel in Dhaka.

The Datathon competition was organised by Robi. Datathon 2.0 was powered by AWS (Amazon Web Services), Huawei was the platinum sponsor, and Brain Station was the cloud expertise partner.

Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury and Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Haznah Md Hashim were present on the occasion as special guests.

Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury said, “If we do not have data sovereignty, the development of Silicon Valley will not be ours. Hence formulation of regulatory framework policy on data processing is the need of the hour. In order to build a technology-based human resource, it is now necessary to involve professionals in addition to government, industry and academia.”

Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd CEO Peter Pan Junfeng was also present at the closing ceremony. “We have created congenial atmosphere for Robi to compete with the giant operators, we hope that Robi will utilise the scope and better its services quality,” he said.

Robi Acting CEO and Chief Financial Officer M Riyaaz Rasheed said, “The digital economy we are creating for a Smart Bangladesh will require skilled Data Scientists and Data Engineers. As the leading digital operator, Robi is proud to have taken up this cause through organising the Datathon 2.0 competition.”

Team Instinct was adjudged as the champion team of the competition. The first runner-up position was secured by a team named, Numpy, while the second runner-up position was held by another team named, Viking Raiders.

The champion team won Tk 2 lakh prize money, while the first and the second runners-up teams walked away with one and a half lakh and one lakh taka respectively.

Nuren Shams and Yeaminur Rahman received Tk 1 lakh each for being the best Data Engineers of the competition. Abdul Basit and Partho Ghosh were recognised as the best Data Scientists of the Datathon 2.0 competition and received Tk 1 lakh each as prize money.
