BGMEA and GIZ awarded eighteen apparel makers with the Sustainability Leadership Award which has been added to the success of the week-long celebration of textile Made in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and German-based Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH jointly organised the award-giving programme at the international convention city Bashundhara in the capital on Thursday, said a press release.
Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury graced the event as the chief guest.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan and GIZ Project Manager Michael Klode were also present at the programme.
BGMEA President said, “Bangladesh is globally acclaimed for its exemplary strides in workplace safety and leadership role in the area of sustainability in the RMG industry.I believe while the Sustainability Leadership (TSL) Award recognizes the best practices of Bangladeshi garment factories in environmental, social, and innovation areas, it will inspire others to adopt sustainable practices to strengthen the image of Made in Bangladesh in the global market as modern, safe, and green.”
Michael Klode said, “Germany, ranking as number 1 importing country of textile Made in Bangladesh in the EU, is committed to continue supporting compliant factories alongside our partners, many of whom are present in this room tonight. Our TSL award winners, the frontrunners of a thriving sector, are lighting the way ahead.”
The awards were presented in the three categories ‘Social Compliance’, ‘Environmental Excellence’ and ‘Innovation’ which were divided into nine subcategories.
‘Social Compliance’ winners excel in women empowerment at the workplace, social initiatives in factory neighborhoods and overall social setup.
‘Environmental excellence’ was achieved by factories that lead in water efficiency, recycling of textile waste materials or overall environmental setup. In addition, innovative practices were rewarded. The subcategories included innovations for business development, worker welfare and the future.
A total of six factories received the awards in three subcategories under the social standards category. Vintage Denim Studio was declared champion and Echotex Limited runner-up for the most convincing factory setup, while Ananta Garments and Pacific Jeans were recognised for women empowerment at the workplace.
Furthermore, Epyllion Knitwear and Flamingo Fashions were named for the best-supported social initiatives in the neighbourhood of factories.
In the environmental excellence, Envoy Textiles and Zaber & Zubair Fabrics were recognised as environmental champions, while Color City and Universal Jeans were honoured for water use reduction and Matin Spinning Mills, SIMCO Spinning and Textiles, and Karupannya Rangpur for recycling of textile waste materials.
Karupannya Rangpur also received the award in the innovation excellence category for best innovation from the business perspective. JM Fabrics got the award for the same reason. Beximco Recover and Jinnat Fashions got the honour for best innovation for the future, and Square Fashions and SQ Celsius for best innovation for workers’ welfare under the innovation excellence category.
