UNICEF starts activism for violence against children and women

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs with support from UNICEF started the celebration of 16 days of activism against violence against children and women on November 25.

During the 16 days, over 300 community members actively participated in the event including those child rights facilitators, community volunteers, peer leaders and local authorities like ward counsellor, Md Sazzad Hossein were present.

The joint secretary of MoWCA and project director of accurate protection for children Mr Latif chaired the opening of the 16-day national celebration in Mirpur on November 27.

During his speech, Mr Latif highlighted that “Women's contributions are not well acknowledged but they contribute more than everyone else to the family and economy of Bangladesh.”

The chief guest from UNICEF Elisa Calpona, Child Protection manager, has expressed concern about the alarming prevalence of violence against children and women worldwide. Ms Calpona has reiterated that over 5 million children in Bangladesh will receive awareness raising on the prevention of violence and harmful packages like child marriage.
