The Centre for Archaeological Studies (CAS) and the Department of General Education (GED) of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) jointly organised a seminar titled ‘Re-Visiting Historical Records of South Asia’
The seminar was held at ULAB’s main campus in Dhaka on Sunday, said a press release. The seminar commenced with a welcome speech by the ULAB Vice Chancellor Professor Imran Rahman. In his speech, he highlighted the activities of ULAB’s Centre for Archaeological Studies (CAS) as well as the significance of epigraphy, a primary tool of archaeology, for the reconstruction of history.
At the seminar, Professor of the Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture, University of Calcutta Dr Susmita Basu Majumdar delivered a lecture titled ‘Interrogating Mauryan and Contemporary Records’. In her lecture, she brought to light the character of the Mauryan Empire, for example the emperor Ashoka, the empire’s policies, thoughts including its relation with the other regions by analysing selected inscriptions from the eastern sector of the Mauryan territory including Mahasthan stone inscription.
Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture, University of Calcutta Dr Sayantani Pal discussed on Epigraphy as text based on BD Chattopadhyaya’s book on early mediaeval rural settlements and society.
