StanChart recognised as highest taxpayer in banking category

Standard Chartered Bank (Bangladesh) has recently been recognised as the highest taxpayer in banking category in the assessment year 2021-22 by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

As the apex authority of tax administration in Bangladesh, NBR handed out tax cards to 141 individuals and companies as top taxpayers at a ceremony in Dhaka for their outstanding contribution as model taxpayers in the development of the nation, said a press release.

Sabbir Ahmed, Head of Consumer, Private and Business Banking, Standard Chartered Bangladesh, received the award on behalf of the bank.

Naser Ezaz Bijoy, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bangladesh, said, “This recognition is a testament to our commitment to remain a partner in progress to Bangladesh. We have been one of the highest taxpayers in the banking category consistently over many years.

“It is a matter of pride for us at Standard Chartered to see that, through our significant contribution to the national exchequer, we are a force for good in the journey to prosperity of this nation.”

He also said, “We believe that NBR and private sector needs to continue to work together for better Tax compliance through simplified fiscal policy regime which will help improve Tax to GDP ratio and propel Bangladesh further in its growth trajectory.”

With over 117 years of uninterrupted presence in the nation, Standard Chartered Bangladesh is the only multinational universal bank in Bangladesh. As the nation’s longstanding partner in progress, the bank is facilitating major investments in power, energy, transportation, and urban development, said the release.

The bank accounts for a major share of all export and import financing, as well as power generation financing and SME lending by foreign banks. At the same time, the bank commands a leading position in the retail finance space, with a strong share of card spend, consistent efforts to grow internet banking users, and the launch of several innovative products.

The bank’s dedication to promoting economic and social development in Bangladesh is centred around principles of sustainability and equity.

Standard Chartered’s commitment to support Bangladesh’s continued journey of prosperity saw the bank secure over 30 major international awards in 2021, added the release.
