BRiCM holds seminar on standard of chemical measurements

Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements (BRiCM) held a seminar titled “Attaining international standard in chemical measurements: BRiCM’s pursuit” in its auditorium on Saturday.

Senior Secretary of Science and Technology Ministry Ziaul Hasan and Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh attended the seminar as the special guests, said a press release

CEO and MD of Unilever Bangladesh Javed Akhter and MD of Pran group Md Eleash Mridha were honourable guests at the seminar chaired by DG of BRiCM Dr Mala Khan.

Dr Khan, the founding scientist and DG of BRiCM presented the keynote speech while she described the journey of BRiCM along with its success and achievements.

Ziaul Hasan said “PM has created this institute considering of importance of chemical measurements in our national development. BRiCM is working day and night to reach its target and it is succeeding.”

In his speech, Tapan Kanti Ghosh said the government is working hard for creating a knowledge-based society and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is relentlessly working for implementing Bangabandhu’s dream of Sonar Bangla. He also emphasised attaining international standards in chemical measurements.

Unilever Bangladesh CEO and MD Javed Akhter stated that BRiCM’s example is unparalleled in providing internal standard services.

Targeting to establish the international standard in chemical measurements in the country, BRiCM is developing, disseminating and delivering calibration, proficiency testing or inter-laboratory comparison, certified reference materials, method validation and also reference measurement services.

BRiCM has so far developed 3912 chemical measurements (analytical) services, calibration services for 22 pieces of analytical equipment for laboratory and industry and 32 pieces of medical equipment used in medical diagnostic laboratories.

BRiCM has organised 41 proficiency testing programmes and also participated in 7 international proficiency testing programmes, and produced 3 reference materials (pH Buffer, Diclofenac Na & Acetaminophen).

BRiCM is striving for attaining dependable test results, helping other laboratories in attaining international standards and resolving the problem concerning different results of the same test in different laboratories.

To assist the other testing laboratories of the country, it regularly organises proficiency testing or inter-laboratory comparison programme. Alongside, to prove its capability, it participates in the PT/ ILC programme organised by the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) jointly with USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, and China where BRiCM’s results stay in line with the international standard.

BRiCM has not only earned international affiliation but also attained the capacity for earning and saving foreign currency through providing international services.

BRiCM regularly organises training programmes for the scientist and officers of universities, laboratories and industries to help develop human resources in chemical measurements.

For assisting the government and the people in fighting Covid-19, BRiCM has developed, produced and delivered hand rub/sanitiser, Covid-19 specimen collection kit (VTM), Bangasafe oronasal spray, Covid-19 specific antibody (IgG) test service, Genome sequencing of Coronavirus.

This institute is incessantly working for developing national production capacity through technology acquisition, technology transfer and innovation, which are the prerequisite for graduation to the status of a developing country and sustaining it.
