EU launches course on trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants

In partnership with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Eastern University (EU) will offer a course on 'Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants' in the spring 2023 semester of the LLM Programme.

The classes will commence on February 10, said a press release. The announcement of the course was made in a programme held at the seminar hall of the EU where University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Human Rights Commission member Professor Dr Bishwajit Chanda was present as the chief guest.

GLO.ACT Project Coordinator of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Aimee Comrie was the special guest at the event. Explaining the rationale for introducing a course on “Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling” at the university level, Special Guest

In her speech, Amy Comrie said, “Students need to have a proper understanding of corruption, crime, human trafficking, migrant-smuggling, terrorism and cyber-crime in addition to the conventional curriculum. To suppress these crimes, we want to create a positive mindset in them.”

Euridice Marquez, GLO.ACT program management officer of UNODC headquarters in Vienna delivered the welcome speech while welcome remarks were drawn by Professor Dr Md Anwar Zahid, dean of the law faculty.

Besides, the National Programme Coordinator of GLO.ACT Bangladesh of UNODC, Mahdy Hasan highlighted the overall aspect of the new course.

Eastern University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shahid Akhtar Hossain presided over the event where ABM Imdadul Haque Khan, chairperson of the law department was present as moderator.
