IEBA leaders meet president-elect Md Shahabuddin

The leaders of the International Ethnosport Bangladesh Association (IEBA) paid a courtesy call on the newly declared president-elect of Bangladesh Mohammad Shahabuddin at his Gulshan office in Dhaka on Tuesday.

A retired judge and former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Md Shahabuddin is also a member of the advisory council of IEBA, an organisation representing 42 countries of the world, said a press release.

During the meeting, the IEBA representatives congratulated Md Shahabuddin and wished him long life and good health while Md Shahabuddin also wished success of IEBA in the coming days.

The IEBA delegates were including the advisory council members Former Secretary of the Housing and Public Works Ministry Khandakar Shawkat Hossain, Former Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Md Faruque Hossain, Chief Coordinator of Padma Bridge Major General (Retd.) Abu Syeed Md Masud, General Insurance Corporation Managing Director (Additional Secretary) Syed Belal Hossain, Mohammad Zahirul Islam, managing director of Smart Technologies (BD) Ltd (Sony-Smart), the official distributor of Japanese world-famous brand Sony in Bangladesh and a leading company in the country’s electronics, and information technology sector, Hakkani Publishers’ Chairman Golam Mustafa, Alhaj Maqbul Hossain College Principal AFM Rezaul Hasan, Managing Director of Multinational Organisation Gulf Naseem and Green Field General Trading Akbar Hossain, Founder and General Secretary of IEBA Md Al Mamun, IEBA Joint Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the government Sohel Ahmed, IEBA Executive Member and Deputy Secretary of the government Md Ziaur Rahman and IEBA Treasurer Dr Mohd Haroon Rashid.

Shahabuddin will be the 22nd president of Bangladesh.

On February 13, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal declared ruling party’s nominee Shahabuddin, Awami League Advisory Council member, the president-elect of the country. President Hamid is set to complete his tenure on April 23 this year.

According to the constitution, a new president has to be elected within 90 to 60 days prior to the end of the incumbent president’s tenure.

Mohammad Shahabuddin was born in Pabna in 1949. He was a vibrant activist of Chhatra League and served as Pabna district unit president. He was also the convener of the Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Shangram Parishad of Pabna in 1971 and took part in the Liberation War. He also served as the president of Pabna district Jubo League in 1974.

In 1975, he was imprisoned after the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Later, he joined the civil service (judiciary) in 1982. He was elected the secretary general of the Judicial Service Association in 1995.

Shahabuddin retired as a district and sessions judge in 2006, after serving in various positions for 25 years. He was the law ministry appointed coordinator in the Bangabandhu killing case. He served the ACC as commissioner from 2011 to 2016.
