International School Dhaka-ISD organised various cultural programmes in different languages --Bengali, Spanish, Afrikaans, Filipino, French, Japanese and Hindi -- marking the International Mother Language Day.
To align with the 2023 International Mother Language Day theme, the school sang a welcome song, ‘Hello my friends,’ in six different languages. It was followed by Ekusher Gaan – Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano – to mark the Bangla Language Movement.
Officials of the school also paid tributes to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement.
Speaking on the occasion, Thomas Van Der Wielen, director of ISD, said, “The importance of this daye goes beyond Bangladesh as people globally realise how all mother tongues are important. Our students must understand what happened all those years back and how that event still benefits us today.”
To further enhance the tribute, students performed a musical drama, ‘Ami Banglae Gaan Gai’, ‘February Song’, and an alphabet song.
The school performed a song called ‘Africa Rise Up’ in three different African languages: KiSwahili, Afrikaans, Shona, and Nyanja, showing respect for multiple cultures and languages.
Lastly, all staff of the school performed a song called ‘We are the World’.
The school also prepared a language wall for everyone to write in their own languages. On the wall, students, parents, and teachers at the ISD community from 31 nationalities wrote their favorite lines from their country’s national anthem in different languages.
