Adviser to the Prime Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on Thursday visited a Solar Cooking Project designed by Professor Emeritus Dr M Rezwan Khan of United International University (UIU).
Executive director of the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) of United International University (UIU) Rezwan Khan was also present during the visit at Bosila of Mohammadpur, said a press release.
The cooking project was jointly financially supported by Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), UK and Energising Development (EnDev), GIZ and implemented by UIU.
In this project, a low-cost cooking method has been developed using a combination of the solar and power grid. The project is already running in three commercials and three households. This will reduce cooking costs and accelerate the use of renewable energy.
For a family of 5 members, the cost of cooking will be approximately Tk 500-600, which is much less than the cost of firewood or gas cylinders and at the same time it is cleaner and safer.
Munira Sultana, chairman of SREDA, Alamgir Morshed, executive director and CEO of IDCOL, Prof Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, vice-chancellor (in-charge) of UIU, Habib Iftikher Alam, executive director, head of R&I of Walton Hi-Tech Industries, faculty members, officials, academicians, government officials, researchers and other distinguished guests from various universities and institutions were present at the programme.
