To create awareness to prevent sexual harassment, eve-teasing, ragging, and violence against women, Daffodil International University (DIU) organised a seminar at Daffodil Smart City in Birulia of Savar on Saturday.
The event titled “Say No to Sexual Harassment: Don’t Be Silent, Be Strong” was organised by the university’s Complaint Committee to Prevent Sexual Harassment at the international conference hall of the university, reads a press release.
Dr Fauzia Moslem, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Mahfuza Liza, superintendent of police (International Affairs) of Special Branch of Bangladesh Police and Professor Dr Sunjida Shahriah, physician, counsellor, psychotherapy practitioner at Phoenix Wellness Center Bangladesh and member secretary of Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh were present as the special guests.
Dr Sharifa Sultana, Chairperson of DIU Complaint Committee to Prevent Sexual Harassment and deputy proctor presided over the programme where prof AMM Hamidur Rahman, dean of the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty, Prof Dr Shaikh Md. Allayear, proctor, Prof Dr Syed Mizanur Rahman, director of Student Affairs, Dr Liza Sharmin, head of the English Department also spoke, among others.
Addressing as the chief guest Dr Fauzia Moslem emphasised the need of eradicating sexual harassment and violence against women from society.
“The problem is not with individual men or women, but rather in the social structure we live in and we need to raise awareness and take necessary measures to prevent violence against women everywhere, from the family to the battlefield”, she stated. She also mentioned the increasing prevalence of sexual harassment, particularly online, and the importance of making students aware of the issue.
Professor Dr Sanjida Shahriah said that sexual harassment is unacceptable sexual behaviour and an attempt to keep women away from work and education.
Mahfuza Liza, elaborated on the various ways in which criminals can start online sexual harassment, including profile hacking and cyberbullying, and how students can protect themselves from such situations.
Dr Sharifa Sultana encouraged attendees to report any incidents of sexual harassment to the University Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee and emphasised that DIU should follow a zero-tolerance policy in this regard.
The seminar was a successful effort to raise awareness among students about the prevention of sexual harassment and violence against women, both online and offline.
