The International Girls in ICT Day was celebrated in the country on Thursday like elsewhere across the world aimed at in-spiring a global movement to increase the representation of girls and women in technology.
In line with the global theme ‘Digital Skills for Life’ for this year, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Divi-sion organized a discussion at Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) auditorium at the ICT Tower in the city’s Agargaon area to mark the day, said a press release.
ICT Division Secretary Md Shamsul Arefin spoke at the discussion as the chief guest with Additional Secretary of the division Mohammad Navid Safiullah in the chair.
Bangladesh High-Tech Park Authority (BHTPA) Managing Director Mohammad Rezaul Karim, BCC Executive Director Ranajit Kumar and ICT Department Director General Md Mostafa Kamal also spoke at the discussion, among others.
Emphasizing on engaging women in soft skills or ICT sector, Arefin said the country will become more developed economi-cally and prosperous and march forward if they (women) can be made skilled manpower.
Noting that there is no alternative to making women as entrepreneurs to improve the country’s socio-economic condition, he said the women entrepreneurs are contributing to the overall development of the country by earning remittances.
Arefin said that the ICT Division is taking and implementing various programmes to make women skilled and urged them (women) to come forward with new initiatives.
The day is an initiative of the Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 by the member states of the International Telecommunication Union to create programmes that encourage girls and young women to consider studies and careers in information and communication technologies
