State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury said that some Japanese private companies have offered to hire skilled manpower from Bangladesh.

He said this after a meeting with a Japanese delegation of 11 representatives of various Japanese companies at the ministry on Sunday.

Shofiqur said, “Japanese companies have expressed interest in recruiting more skilled professionals, technical and construction workers from Bangladesh. We have requested them to apply following the proper procedure.”

The minister stated that the Technical Training Centre (TTC) will be arranged for the Japanese delegation to provide them with the necessary technical training.

"There they will provide training to the interested personnel and will be able to select the qualified ones," he said.

The delegation – led by Masafumi Yurigumi, of the Yurigumi Maritime Company Limited of Japan – informed that they needed a good number of skilled workers.

In response to the questions about the Malaysian labour market situation, and the deadline for the investigation committee to report and complain, the minister said, "The investigation committee is working on this matter and you will be informed about it in detail after the investigation is completed.”

“Hopefully, there will be recommendations on what kind of punishment should be given to those who are guilty. Also, necessary measures will be taken for those affected to travel to Malaysia.”

According to the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), Japan recruited more than 900 workers from Bangladesh last year.

Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Md Ruhul Amin, BMET Director General Saleh Ahmed Mujaffor, Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited Managing Director Mallick Anwar Hossain, Wage Earners' Welfare Board Director General Md Hamidur Rahman was also present among others.
