The first consignment of potatoes weighing 74 tonnes reached the Benapole Land Port from India on Thursday night.

74.01 tonnes of potatoes in 1,480 sacks in three trucks entered Benapole port around 9pm through Petrapole port in India.

Benapole Land Port Acting Director Rezaul Karim said that due to the official holiday on Friday, the shipment of potatoes was released on Saturday.

The importer company is Integrated Foods & Beverages Private Ltd. and the exporter is PepsiCo India.

According to customs sources, it will be possible to supply the potatoes at a Tk 30-32 rate. The customs duty fee for each tonne of potato is $180.

The government decided to import potatoes from India to address the increasing prices in the country's market. Out of 77 applications, the government allowed 12 importers to import about 50,000 tonnes of potatoes from India.

Potatoes will be imported through the country's Benapole and Hili land ports.
