HSBC celebrates 50 years of US-Bangladesh bilateral ties

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) in Bangladesh arranged an event titled “US-Bangladesh Business Forum: Building on 50 years’ of friendship”, celebrating the ties between the two countries and calling for US investors to invest in Bangladesh.

HSBC Bangladesh arranged the event in partnership with the US-Bangladesh Business Council (USBBC), read a press release received on Monday.

The forum and dinner reception was joined by senior Bangladesh and US government officials, US and Bangladesh business community leaders, executive business delegates from the US Chamber of Commerce’s US-Bangladesh Business Council visiting from the United States, and leading start-up founders, dynamically engaged to strengthen the US-Bangladesh economic corridor.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas, HSBC Bangladesh CEO Md Mahbub Ur Rahman, and Chevron Business Development Vice President Jay R Pryor delivered their speeches on the occasion.

In his speech, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas said, “The United States is willing to go as fast as Bangladesh is to deepen our partnership. And I also believe we can go fastest together in building our trade and investment relationship. And the US-Bangladesh Business Delegation here in Dhaka right now demonstrates just how ready the US private sector is to invest in Bangladesh.”

Highlighting the historic importance of US-Bangladesh business ties and HSBC's capability to support the special relationship to reach new levels, HSBC Bangladesh CEO Md Mahbub Ur Rahman said, “Bangladesh has achieved steady growth over the past decade and is set to graduate into a developing country by 2026. With surging domestic demand, growing service and industry sectors and steady investment in digitisation, the country will continue to attract foreign investments.”

“With our strong international connectivity, HSBC is well poised to foster the growing trade and investment between the United States and Bangladesh,” he added.

The USA is one of the largest investors in Bangladesh, the release reads, and the majority of the investments are in the gas and petroleum sector.

"There is growing interest among the US companies to put their money into different promising sectors of Bangladesh," the release added.
