The Institute of Architects, Bangladesh (IAB) has hosted an enlightening event titled "Bangabandhu: Constructing Bangladesh" which revolved around the indelible influence of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the progressive development and architecture of Bangladesh.

The programme commenced with a stirring documentary, followed by firsthand accounts from the Science and Technology Minister, Chief Discussant, Architect Yeafesh Osman.

He shared his heartfelt experiences from the liberation war and his association with Bangabandhu amidst the barbarities of the Pakistani Army, read a press release on Saturday.

Drawing from his profound journey, Yeafesh Osman emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts among professionals like engineers, architects, and planners to foster accurate and purposeful nation-building.

The minister recounted the discrimination he felt as a Bengali there. On his return to East Pakistan, he found solace and inspiration in the works of Bangabandhu and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities bestowed upon him by Bangabandhu and his daughter, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

Architect Dr Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed, the President of the 25th Executive Council, Institute of Architects, Bangladesh, emphasised the dire need to uplift the rural economy, echoing Bangabandhu's vision for a more inclusive nation.

The IAB president highlighted the importance of bridging the urban-rural gap and addressing housing needs as detailed in the nation's constitution. He announced the Institute's proposal for an architect’s cadre in upazillas and zillas, spearheaded by the current Executive Council, and addressed the necessity to safeguard modern heritage alongside preserving historical sites.

With Architect Uttam Kumar Saha invoking nationalistic feelings through his melodic rendition of 'sarthok a jonom amar', and Architect Tanvir Nawaz's literary contribution being acknowledged, the evening beautifully encapsulated the fusion of past inspirations and future aspirations.
